Internet Business 101 : Master of your Domain

Master of your Domain
Author: Jason A. Martin

Having your own domain name is an important first step in any online business. Today, it is a necessity, not a luxury. There are many places on the Internet to purchase your domain name from but I like one place in particular, PowerPipe.com. It is more of a self-serve registrar. If you are completely new to this experience, perhaps GoDaddy.com will be better for you. The prices are slightly higher but they have nice services and an easy to use console. I view PowerPipe.com as more the intermediate’s place to domain shop.

Domains at powerpipe.com only cost $7.00. Your domain also comes with name server service; more on this in a moment. Having purchased thousands of domains over the past eleven years, I have come to rely on powerpipe for all my domain purchasing. I do have a couple elsewhere, like GoDaddy.com.

Domains at other places can cost up to $20.00 per year, and there is no reason to pay this amount. Godaddy.com domains are down under $10 now and a great choice if this is your first domain. Make sure the place your register your domain at provided name server services. By using the name servers outside of your server or hosting company, you retain full control over your domain. If you one day decide to change your hosting company, you can instantly point your domain(s) to the new server IP instead of waiting on your old hosting company to get a around to it.

Imagine your hosting company goes down and you have had it with them. Quickly you setup with a new hosting company and are ready to go but there is one problem; your domain is still pointing to the old hosting company. Having lost your business, they feel no rush to process your request to move and now you are hung out to dry. If you had control over your own name server data, this could have all been adverted.

So next time you are in the market for a domain name, don't get overcharged, head to powerpipe.com or godaddy.com for your domain names. Be careful not to get sucked into buying a whole lot of extras you do not need. Typically, you just need your domain, email and DNS (name server) ability.
