Duplicating Content And Killing Your Business

November 20, 2006

It’s a common practice for small business website owners to try to maximize their efforts by taking content from their website and using it on other websites. One example would be taking an article from your website and submitting it to countless article submission websites for general use. This practice is very damaging—and I’m not just talking about search engine penalties.

Duplicate Content Penalty

It’s long been rumored and now it’s become known that Google will penalize pages consisting of content that’s already known. For instance, if you have an article about Internet business on your website and use it on a new website, one of them will be penalized in the search engine result pages.

Because of this, you should never reuse content. If you must reuse a piece of content, rewrite the whole thing. Now, let’s move on to something far more important.

Don’t Devalue Yourself

When you take a piece of content from your website—that’s original—and use it elsewhere, you destroy its exclusivity. Therefore, you devalue your website. Read that again if you must.

You want your website to contain as much exclusive content as possible—that’s the hook. While being penalized in Google for duplicate content is bad enough, devaluing your business instantly is even worse.

Many webmasters try to be slick by waiting for the piece of content to be listed in Google and then letting others use it. While this might get past the penalty, it still destroys the value instantly.

It’s Real Simple

I’ve seen discussions go on for months about this issue. People come up with all sorts of pointless schemes. Follow these three easy steps and you’ll be all set.

1. Never let others use exclusive content from your site. That’s a value point.
2. If you are at a loss for ideas, rewrite the article before allowing its use elsewhere.
3. Don’t put nonexclusive content on your website when possible.

There’s no reason to waste any more valuable time on this issue.
